Creating a local chapter of SPSSNY at Wegmans School of Pharmacy at St.
John Fisher College has been both invigorating and an adventure. Forming
a collaboration made up of pharmacy students from different backgrounds
has given this chapter an executive team and membership that is unwavering
in their desire to advocate for our profession and our patients in the
community. While this student chapter is still in its infancy, we are
working to generate ways to connect with those in the community. One
such example of this is the formation of a child-oriented program to
improve the understanding of medications and the safety of medications
in the household. This is something that a number of our members are
passionate about, as this could help to reduce the misuse of medications
as these children transition to adolescence and adulthood. We hope to
implement this program in multiple school districts in the Greater Rochester
area as our academic year progresses. We are also working on the creation
of events to advocate for our profession. In the next year we hope to host
those who represent us in Washington for a day of discussion, activities,
and exhibition of the capabilities of pharmacists in today’s world. This
chapter of SPSSNY has a motivated body of individuals all working to
achieve the same goal; I am confident that we will be able to help those
in our community as well as those in our profession.
