The President of the United States:
Recognize Pharmacists as
Health Care Providers!!!

Although the United States Social Security Act acknowledges the importance of the clinical services provided by professionals such as dietitians, clinical social workers, nurses, and physician assistants; it does not recognize pharmacists as health care providers. Therefore, pharmacists cannot be reimbursed by Medicare for providing services such as medication therapy management, collaborative drug therapy management, and consultation services. This is a serious limitation to the ability of pharmacists to provide these services.

As drug regimens become more multifarious, the need to ensure proper medication use and adherence becomes even more important. Pharmacoepidemiology literature and studies such the as Ashville Project and the Diabetes Ten City Challenge have shown that interventions by pharmacists both lower health care costs and improve health outcomes such as lowering average systolic blood pressure, glycosylated hemoglobin, and LDL cholesterol1. Changing the medication compensation structure is therefore important for both improving patient outcomes and for the progression of the profession of pharmacy. Please take a moment to read this petition to Congress and the President regarding this issue, and sign it electronically by entering your name and information if you agree that pharmacists should be recognized as health care providers.
